Chapter 24, Problems 7-12

This original blog post has gotten pretty well buried, so I'm restarting it. In fact, as of Tuesday morning, there have not been any questions or discussion relevant to Chapt. 24 posted!

I am extending the due date for this assignment to Thursday (Nov. 4), 3:00 PM.

These problems are from the second half of SV8 Chapter 24, and cover the material of the November 2 lecture.

Hello,

Number 9 for me reads:
Sunlight is incident on a diffraction grating that has xlines/cm The second-order spectrum over the visible range (400-700 nm) is to be limited to 1.75 cm along a screen that is a distance L from the grating. What is the required value of L?

I do d=1/#lines/cm to get d.
I do arcsine(2*lambda/d) with 400nm as lambda1.

then I did it for the 700nm lambda. I'm getting really small angles, .002 and .1145 degrees. I don't know what I'm doing incorrectly.

Is your calculator set for degrees or radians? If you do d=(1/#lines/cm), you'll get d in cm, not m. Either of those might cause a problem like you describe.
