Lab 3 pretest is now available

I posted the announcement for the Lab 3 pretest availability for all PHY 124 sections and sent it to each of your email addresses (the ones that Blackboard accesses). As usual, the pretest assignment will be available to you until your lab section begins.

Can someone help me with problems 6 and 7? I am getting the numbers correct, but apparently I am typing the formulas in wrong. For number 6 I typed in 10+5 which was marked wrong, but my answer of 15 is correct. Also, for number 7 I typed in sqrt((.5^2)+(.25^2)) which was wrong, but my answer of .55 is correct. Obviously on paper I have the formulas correct since my numerical answers are right. I feel like I am following the syntax correctly so I don't understand why I am not getting the formula answers right. Any suggestions?

PS-I also tried typing them in as R1+R2 and sqrt((DeltaR1^2)+(DeltaR2^2)) and that was also incorrect.

Anonymous,
I hope you agree that giving even partially correct answers in the blog takes away the opportunity for other students to work the problems independently. For the formulas that require MapleTA syntax, I'll comment that you should use symbols, not numbers. Make sure you use the identical symbol defined in the problem for each resistor or its uncertainty.

Anonymous,
One more thing. In the numerical parts are you entering the unit kohm that the problem instructions say you must enter ?

I apologize for giving answers, I thought this was like webassign where we each had different numbers to work out. I will try to remember not to do that in the future.

I was eventually able to get the answers correct by doing a copy and paste from the directions that were given. I tried using symbols, but there is a sigma symbol next to the answer box that allows you to set it to answer in text or symbols. I had it set for text because I have no idea how to type in the actual symbols without going into a character key every time. As for your question about the numerical answers; yes, I used kohm. The numerical half of each question was the only part I was able to get correct on my own. Thank you for your help.

Hi Professor-
On my MapleTA, it no longer gives me the "give details" choice after I finish my test. Is this normal?

Anonymous (second one),

Yes. I set the software so that you should have gotten a "How Did I do?" for each problem, but the system did not behave correctly. I complained this morning (Monday), and I believe I have manually reset it for all sections so that the "How did I do?" appears for each problem. I regret these software issues over which I seem to have little control.
